Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.
